R.I.P. Charlie Cooper (Telefon Tel Aviv)

(April 12, 1977 - January 22, 2009.)

I can't believe it. Chris Cooper, 1/2 of the dynamic duo Telefon Tel Aviv, died a few days ago. I was blown away the first time I heard them. It's one of those life-changing music that leaves you scarred in a very good way. Listening to them elevates you to a sonic soundscape filled with soothing synth patterns, firm confident swells, gushing beats, vocal layers, and randomized soft glitches.

The track "Fahrenheit Fair Enough" is perfect for meditation. It brings your soul to a higher level like a (musical) orgasm. Teary-eyed. I love the album "Map of What is Effortless". I was like, "Shit, how'd they do that? I wanna do that too!" Telefon Tel Aviv are master sound smiths. They wield simple elements into something complex but very sweet on the ear. Like a magic.

They're on my "Top-10-acts-to-watch-before-I-die." And I guess that won't happen anymore :( I even sent a condolence note to their Myspace account. I'm a fan boy. I also remember messaging them years ago. Hay.

The press release didn't say how he died. But, according to Wikipedia, "A CBS2 Chicago article about Charles Cooper death specifies that he went missing on January 21st before being found dead." :(

Joshua Eustis, the other great mind of Telefon Tel Aviv, speaks:

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.

Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a neice, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

Yours in Music,

Joshua Eustis
